Cover Letter Writing

How to write a cover letter

A good place to start when cover letter writing is to use a template. There are hundreds of cover letter templates all over the internet. Have a search around and try them out. Generally speaking cover letters tend to all follow a similar format. This is a really basic cover letter template.

[Greeting]
[I am writing to you with interest in this position]
[I have these skills and experience and this is why I am good for the role]
[Please find my CV attached]
[Sign off]

Obviously, you need to be specific about the role you are applying for, and why your skills and experience make you suitable for the position.

What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is the letter your write to the employer you are applying to.

You introduce yourself. You explain the job you are interested in and why. You explain a little bit about your skills, knowledge, and experience and why you would be good for the job. You don’t need to explain a great about because your CV that you send with it should show this is greater detail.

How long should it be?

It needs to be no more than a page. It all depends on the job you are applying for; some roles will be more complex than others and would require a little bit more detail and explanation about why you are suitable for a job.

Just remember, reading takes time, and for the person reading your application they need to be able to get the information they need to decide whether or not to be able to invite you in for an interview quickly. Make it plain, simple, clear and obvious why you are suitable for the job.

What information should I include?

Include your best skills, knowledge, and experience.

Your cover letter is your first impression. So, lead with your strongest qualities. You need to standout from other candidates and appeal to this employer. Don’t save your best attributes for your CV(include them on there too) in the hope that you can explain them in your interview. You need to get the interview, and you get the interview by showing how great you are.

Being modest is important, but being shy won’t help you. Be confident, happy, and proud of who you are and what you have to offer.

What is the secret to writing a good cover letter?

It’s just like any other letter, in terms of layout. So, make sure you write and structure it well.

Make sure you break it up into sections so it is easier for an employer to read. Check it for spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes.

But, as always, the most important thing to do is to get it done and send it off. If you find that the way you write your cover letter isn’t getting you any interviews then consider changing it or looking for help on how to write it in a better style.
